Asian gold and silver souvenirs and First Day Cover sold out of stock several times

The Guangzhou Asian Games may have come to an end, but the enthusiasm of Foshan residents for collecting souvenirs from the event has not faded. Recently, I visited several stores, including ICBC, Postal Savings Office, and Huijing Book City, to explore the Asian Games memorabilia market. To my surprise, these items are still in high demand, with many collectors actively seeking out unique pieces. Among the most popular items are gold and silver commemorative souvenirs, first-day covers, and small trinkets. These items carry both sentimental and collectible value, making them a hit among enthusiasts. Industry experts suggest that while some souvenirs, like official gold and silver coins or stamps, may hold investment potential, others—such as ceramics, jewelry, and general precious metal items—are more about nostalgia than financial gain. During my visit to an ICBC branch on Minjiang Road, I saw that gold and silver souvenirs had already sold out. One customer bought three sets of gold key souvenirs and ten sets of silver abacus items at once. According to him, some were for personal collection, while others were meant as gifts for family members. According to an ICBC representative, the gold and silver souvenirs were released on November 5th and sold over 2,500 sets in just one afternoon. Among them, 600 sets of silver keys and abacuses were quickly snapped up, with some items selling out completely. Similarly, the postal office on Huaxi Road also experienced a rush for the Asian Games first-day covers. These items sold out within an hour on the opening day. Although additional shipments arrived later, they didn’t last long. Now, only a few sets remain, and it’s expected they’ll be gone within a couple of days. At Huijing Book City, the souvenir shop was bustling with customers. One middle-aged man was particularly interested in ceramic pieces priced at around 20,000 yuan each and ordered five of them. Meanwhile, younger visitors were drawn to the commemorative trinkets, such as keychains and mini statues of the mascot "Mao Duzi." Though these items don’t have significant collectible value, their affordability and nostalgic appeal make them popular among students and young collectors. Industry insiders emphasize that not all Asian Games souvenirs are worth investing in. While official gold and silver coins from the People's Bank of China can appreciate in value, other items like gold bars or trinkets often sell at prices 2 to 3 times higher than their intrinsic value. For example, the Asian Games gold bar is priced 50–60 yuan per gram above the Shanghai Gold Exchange rate, making them less attractive for investors compared to regular bullion. Experts advise collectors to focus on items with real historical or numismatic value rather than just chasing trends. The Asian Games may be over, but its legacy lives on through the memories and collectibles it left behind.
