According to the latest statistics from FiberOrganon, in 2009, despite the impact of the global financial crisis, the world's total fiber output decreased by only 1% compared with 2008, still reaching 69.61 million tons. Among them, man-made fiber (or chemical fiber) reached 46.255 million tons, an increase of 1.5% year-on-year; natural fiber reached 23.356 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 5.7%. The ratio of man-made fibers and natural fibers to total fiber production was 66.4% and 33.6%, respectively.

Among the man-made fibers, more than 80% are synthetic fibers, among which are mainly polyester fibers, with a total output of 31.937 million tons, accounting for 70% of the total man-made fiber output. The total fiber output in the world also reaches 45%.

The world's largest producer of synthetic fiber is China's mainland, reaching 23.13 million tons. Compared with 2008, the growth rate was 6.7%, accounting for 61.2% of the world's total synthetic fiber production. The second India also increased by 11.6% year-on-year, accounting for 7.9% of the total. The other major producing countries, the United States and Japan, each decreased by 15.4% and 26.1%. The proportion has declined; China's Taiwan, South Korea, and Indonesia have seen smaller declines and their share has increased. The data reflects that the world's synthetic fiber production centers are continuing to shift from the traditional US, Europe, Japan and other developed economies to the mainland of China, India and other emerging Asian regions.
