What color is the pearl? Common pearls are mostly silvery white, but there are many other colors.

The color of the pearl can be divided into body color and color. Halo is caused by physical optical effects, which are related to the transparency of the bead layer and the thickness of the bead layer. The body color is the color of the pearl itself. What color is the pearl? According to the difference in pearl color, people divide the pearl into three groups: light group, black group and colored group.

Pearls in the light color group are the most common pearls. The common colors of this group are silver white, milk white, porcelain white, white rose, pink, yellowish and so on. Among them, silver white is commonly known as "silver skin" is the most popular color of the people; secondly, it is commonly known as "beautiful drunk" and "baby face" pink, also popular with people. At present, the highest price is the white “South Sea Pearl” mainly from the South Pacific region such as Australia. According to reports, its output is only 2300 kg per year. The average price is $120-161 per gram. Balls with a diameter of 9-12MM are priced at $100-600 each, 13-15MM is $800-$5,000, and 16-20MM is $6,000-$10,000. The most unpopular among the lighter groups is the yellowish pearls. In fact, the light-colored pearls often turn yellow after experiencing long-term illumination and wearing, so there is a saying that "the old man is not worth the money."

The black group or dark group is some pearls with deep dark tones, such as pure black, blue black, gray black, brown black, black blue, dark green, dark brown, purple brown and bronze. These pearls are relatively small in origin, mainly from the sea area of Tahiti Island in the South Pacific Ocean, with an annual output of about 5,000 kilograms. Therefore, they have been relatively valuable varieties of pearls for a long time. According to reports, the average price of black beads is 160-200 US dollars per gram. Among them, 8MM beads are about $120 each; 10MM is $250 each; 18MM is $24,000 each. Black pearls are expensive because of the fact that in the market, in addition to natural colors, "black pearls" which have been artificially dyed or irradiated to change colors are also common. Naturally, the latter price is quite different from the natural one.

A colored group is a pearl that is neither light nor dark but has other colors. Such as tin gray, green, blue, purple, purple, yellow - golden yellow and so on. This is not common in pearls, but because its color is not rich and lacks attractive charm, its market price is not necessarily higher than the light color group. However, those pearls in the colored group that have a golden hue called "gold pearls" are the most expensive pearls on the market today. According to reports, the current global production is about 100 kilograms per year, and the average market price of 9-14MM beads is 400-600 US dollars per gram, which is 900-2500 US dollars per piece.

In addition to the natural color, the pearl's body color also has an artificial color. Among them, the black group pearls are most artificially colored, and there are four known methods for artificial coloration.

One is bleaching. After the pearls, especially the light-colored pearls, the bleaching is a must-have process. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the bleaching several times to remove some stains on the surface of the pearl, increasing whiteness and brightness. This type of processing is considered to be an optimization and is acceptable.

The second is dyeing treatment. The most common of these is black pearls that are blackened with silver salts. In recent years, pearls and other colored beads that have been blackened with organic dyes have also been seen. Most of the dyed beads are single color, the halo is not strong, the gloss is weak, but the body color of the colored dyed beads will be more vivid; the irregularly scattered spots can be seen when the magnified inspection; if the pearl surface has cracks and pits, the stain can be seen. Relatively concentrated here. Pearls dyed with silver salt, if tested with a cotton ball with 2% dilute nitric acid, can be seen with black or dark brown on the cotton ball. From the perforations of the pearl perforations, the visible color layer is limited to the surface layer.

The third is radiation coloration. Radiation can turn light colored beads into black, bronze, peacock green, dark purple, dark blue, etc. According to research, the reason why pearls are discolored due to high-energy radiation is related to the trace amount of manganese contained in its components. The seawater pearls contain low manganese, so the color is lighter and more silvery after irradiation. Radiation-induced pearls can have a good color. However, the heat generated by the radiation causes the nacre to slightly expand and the water to disperse, resulting in sporadic irregular cracks (some under the surface layer). The color will not fade if it is tested with concentrated nitric acid. Check from the perforation, if there is a nuclear bead, the color of the bead core is darker than the bead layer. In addition, naturally-tinted Tahiti black pearls (including cultured pearls) often emit red fluorescence under ultraviolet light, while dyed beads or radiation-induced black pearls have no red fluorescence. This is one of the most important criteria for identifying them.

The fourth is color and colored artificial beads to breed colored beads. This kind of colored beads is difficult to identify from the outside. The best way is to use an endoscope. Observing from the pearl perforation, you can see that there are obvious color layers on the surface of the bead.
