Although many people are warning about the risks that high-heeled shoes pose to foot health, their popularity continues to rise. According to Associate Professor Song Weidong from the Department of Foot and Ankle Surgery at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, "Hallux valgus refers to the big toe deviating toward the little toe by more than 15 degrees." He explained that while this condition is common among middle-aged and elderly individuals, it can also affect young women due to improper footwear—such as tight, high-heeled, or pointed-toe shoes. Even though he's only 27 years old, one man has been wearing high heels all year round, and his condition has worsened over time. Initially, only the joint of his big toe protruded, but now even his shoes have become deformed. Professor Song noted that not all bunions are painful. Pain typically occurs when bunion-related tendons or degenerative inflammation develop in the joints, causing discomfort on the inner side of the big toe and the sole. Therefore, if you notice your big toe bending toward the little toe, it’s time to be concerned about hallux valgus. Heels higher than 4 cm can worsen bunions. Once a bunion develops, the front of the foot tends to widen, which causes shoes to stretch and deform. As heel height increases, so does the pressure on the forefoot, leading to issues like friction, corns, blisters, athlete's foot, and ulcers. Changes in the foot’s structure also reduce the arch’s shock-absorbing function, increasing the risk of problems in the ankles, knees, and spine. The higher the heel, the more severe these symptoms become. This is because high heels increase pressure on the forefoot, worsening the bunion condition. They also alter the way weight is distributed along the legs, pelvis, and spine, reducing stability and increasing the risk of falls. To protect your feet from such issues, Professor Song recommends wearing low-heeled shoes with a heel no higher than 2cm. These shoes help strengthen the arch, improve shock absorption, and limit excessive foot movement, thereby increasing stability. He emphasizes that “sky-high” heels should be avoided completely. Choosing the right shoes can help prevent and even correct hallux valgus. Experts say that if the bunion isn’t too severe and the pain is mild, simply changing your shoe habits, using cushions, or undergoing physical therapy can make a big difference. In more severe cases, surgery may be an option, although no single method is considered fully mature or complete. Surgery is usually recommended only when pain is severe, swelling is present, and the big toe is significantly misaligned, making walking difficult.
