Often wearing high heels is beautiful but painful

Although many people are aware of the risks that high-heeled shoes pose to foot health, their popularity continues to rise. Recently, after Lady Gaga made headlines by walking in 23cm stilettos, many fans rushed to follow her style. However, this trend comes with serious consequences—increased chances of ankle sprains, limping, falls, and even wrist fractures. Over time, it can lead to long-term issues like hallux valgus, a condition that not only affects appearance but also causes pain and discomfort. Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a deformity where the big toe angles toward the second toe. According to Associate Professor Song Weidong from Sun Yat-sen University, this condition is often caused by genetic factors, trauma, or rheumatic diseases. However, in younger women, wearing tight, pointed, and high-heeled shoes is the main culprit. A 27-year-old flight attendant recently experienced severe foot pain and was diagnosed with hallux valgus. She had been wearing high heels year-round, and over time, the condition worsened, leading to painful deformities and difficulty walking. Professor Song explains that while not all cases of hallux valgus are painful, when the joint becomes inflamed or the bunion tendon develops, pain on the inner side of the big toe and the sole may occur. Early signs include a visible deviation of the big toe toward the little toe, which should serve as a warning to take action. Heel height plays a significant role in worsening the condition. Heels higher than 4 cm increase pressure on the forefoot, causing more strain and discomfort. Prolonged use of high heels can lead to corns, blisters, fungal infections, and even ulcers. It also alters the way weight is distributed across the feet, affecting the arch’s natural cushioning and potentially leading to problems in the ankles, knees, and spine. The higher the heel, the worse the symptoms tend to become. This is because high heels shift body weight forward, increasing pressure on the toes and exacerbating hallux valgus. They also change the alignment of the lower limbs, pelvis, and spine, reducing stability and increasing the risk of falls. To prevent such issues, Professor Song recommends wearing low-heeled shoes (no more than 2cm) for daily use. These shoes help maintain proper foot arch development, improve shock absorption, and reduce excessive movement, thus enhancing overall stability. He strongly advises against wearing "heaven-high" heels regularly. Preventing hallux valgus is entirely possible with the right footwear choices. Experts suggest that young women who are not yet experiencing pain can correct the issue by changing their shoe habits, using cushions, or undergoing physical therapy. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary if the pain becomes unbearable and the big toe is significantly misaligned.
